Telematics deals with tomorrow's technology today, as almost every object in the future will have an integrated "intelligent" electronic core.
With total revenues of around EUR 28 billion in 2005 and a workforce of more than 125,000, the ICT sector is one of the most important economic areas in Austria today.
Around 75% of total ICT revenue is generated in Vienna. Around 26,000 companies in Austria have a trade licence for information and communication technologies. More than 8,000 of these have moved to Vienna. This has made Vienna the third largest ICT centre in Europe, after London and Munich. From this, in recent years Vienna has developed into the ICT capital of Central and Eastern Europe. Many multinational, as well as Austrian, companies have chosen Vienna as the headquarters of their business activities in Central and Eastern Europe, because of the particular qualities of the location.
With Vienna IT Enterprises (VITE), 2004 saw the creation of a network which today covers 125 IT companies, research and development centres and educational organisations. Additionally, Vienna is also part of the VIENNA REGION, which has developed into the most important economic area in the whole of Central Europe. The VIENNA REGION covers around 23,500 km² - around 30% of Austria's total surface area. 3.5 million people live there, around 43% of Austrians. 45% of Austria's GDP is generated in the VIENNA REGION.
In addition to Vienna, every other province also has start-up and technology centres and technology parks for the information and communication industry. Comprehensive service provision is therefore assured across the whole of Austria. A leading proponent is ICT – Burgenland, the information and communication cluster for Burgenland. ICT – Burgenland is based in the technology centre Eisenstadt, offering ideal conditions for the IT sector, resident amd concentrated around the resrch and expertise centre of the FH Centre for Advanced Studies FH-Studienlehrgangs ICS. It is also home to established IT companies.
The event area in Austria includes the annual ITnT fair, the trade fair for information technology and telecommunications in Austria. After its successful launch in 2005, ITnT has extablished itself as the ICT platform for central, eastern and southeastern Europe. There were 389 exhibitors in 2007, of which 28% were from abroad, who presented products, solutions and services. In 2007 the fair was attended by around 16,800 visitors, of which 12% were foreign visitors, exploiting the opportunity to have face-to-face contact with industry insiders. .
In addition, The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) hosts an anuual E-Day (site in German), a platform which offers the opportunity to make new contacts in the ICT field, to address special requests for daily business life, and to support innovation. E-Day shows current developments and applications in the field of communication technology.
Furthermore, the universities of Linz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt and the technical universities in Vienna and Graz offer a total of eleven study programmes in the ICT field, above all in the areas of IT and telematics. The Technical University Graz offers the most renowned and longest-running university studies in the area of telematics in Austria.
The Fachhochschulen (New Universities of Applied Sciences) sector has also increased its focus in recent years on information and communication technologies. There are currently eight of these national Fachhochschulen, which offer a total of thirteen different study programmes in this field.
There are also study opportunities at the Danube University Krems, which is specialised in further education. Here they offer two training courses, as well as a seminar in the field of vehicle telematics.
