The general manager of the Château Montebello hotel, Werner Sapp, a well known Austrian expatriate was host to the U.S. President George W. Bush, the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper and the President of Mexico Felipe Calderon from august 18 th to august 22 nd . In the framework of the NAFTA summit, the three leaders discussed important issues on north-american free-trade.
For Werner Sapp this summit was very important for the tourist region of Outaouais. The Chateau Montebello is the biggest wood building and attracted attention worldwide. All 211 rooms were occupied during the attendance of the “three amigos”.
According to an amusing article entitled “The bride wore white - and a big W” published in a Canadian newspaper called “the Globe and Mail”, only a newly-wed couple was allowed to stay at the Château during the summit. For security purposes the RCMP required from the bride to wear a tag showing a big W which was standing for “wedding”. This indicated that she was no threat for the security of the three political leaders.
